Hepatic Encephalopathy

Hepatic encephalopathy occurs when there is liver failure. Symptoms include confusion, forgetfulness, irritability, change in mood, difficulty concentrating, slurred speech, and change in sleep-wake pattern.

Treatment for hepatic encephalopathy includes hospitalization, changing diet, medications, and treating conditions. Common drug classes used to treat hepatic encephalopathy are osmotic laxatives, aminoglycoside antibiotics, and rifamycins.
