Pyrethroids are used to treat head lice and scabies. They work by paralyzing and killing the lice or mites. These medications are typically available in topical forms, such as creams, lotions, and shampoos, some of which are available over the counter. One example is permethrin (Elimite, Nix).
PERMETHRIN treats head lice, tiny insects that live in hair. It works by killing the lice. It does not kill the eggs, so a second treatment may be needed.
Nix (permethrin) is an inexpensive drug used to destroy live lice. This drug is slightly more popular than comparable drugs. There is no generic alternative to Nix. It may be covered by your Medicare or insurance plan, but some pharmacy coupons or cash prices could help offset the cost.
Disclaimer: Popularity is based on total prescriptions for the brand and generic versions of each drug, regardless of the condition being treated. Some drugs are prescribed for multiple conditions.
