These medications work by blocking N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the brain. NMDA receptor antagonists come in different forms, including oral pills and nasal sprays. Examples include memantine (Namenda), amantadine (Gocovri), and esketamine (Spravato).

GOCOVRI is indicated for the treatment of dyskinesia in patients with Parkinson’s disease who are treated with levodopa therapy or levodopa therapy with other medicines that increase the effects of dopamine in the brain. GOCOVRI is also used with levodopa and carbidopa in people with Parkinson's disease who are having "off" episodes. It is not known if GOCOVRI is safe and effective in children. This drug is more popular than comparable drugs. There are currently no generic alternatives to Gocovri. It is covered by most Medicare and insurance plans.
