What is Tamsulosin?

Take the capsule approximately 30 minutes after the same meal each day. Swallow the capsule whole. Do not crush, chew, or open it.

Serious Side Effects

  • Low blood pressure
      Higher risk if:
    • Taking medications for high blood pressure

    Especially when you first starting taking Flomax (tamsulosin), you can experience a sudden drop in blood when you get up from sitting or lying down. Symptoms include feeling lightheaded or dizzy after stand up, weakness, blurry vision, fainting, nausea, and confusion. Your body should adjust to it after the first few days. Always get up slowly to help avoid this.

  • Rash
      Higher risk if:
    • History of "sulfa" allergies

    Flomax (tamsulosin) can cause a rare but severe skin rash. Talk to your doctor immediately if you suddenly develop a severe blistering skin rash with fever.

  • Floppy iris syndrome
      Higher risk if:
    • Cataract or glaucoma surgery

    If you're going to have eye surgery, let your surgeon know you're taking (or had taken) Flomax (tamsulosin). It can cause a rare eye condition during the surgery.

  • Heat stroke

    • Alcohol use
    • Heavy exercise
    • Hot weather

    Flomax (tamsulosin) can increase your chances of getting a heat stroke. Drink plenty of fluids if you're going to be in hot weather, especially if you're going to be exercising or drinking alcohol.

  • Sexual problems and prolonged erections

    Flomax (tamsulosin) can affect sex drive and ejaculation. In some rare cases, Flomax (tamsulosin) can also cause erections that last for more than 6 hours. Seek medical attention right away if you have an erection that lasts for more than 4 hours. If not treated in time, this can cause permanent damage to your penis, including impotence.

  • Drug interactions

    Combining Flomax (tamsulosin) with certain drugs (including non-prescription medications, natural products, and vitamins) can affect how your medications work and worsen the side effects. Don't start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor or pharmacist.

The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

  • For oral dosage form (capsules):
    • For benign prostatic hyperplasia:
      • Adults—At first, 0.4 milligram (mg) once a day. Your doctor may increase your dose if needed.
      • Children—Use is not recommended.
Missed dose

If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

A major improvement in urine flow. But not worth taking because of extreme nasal congestion which had me gasping for air and breathing through my mouth in the middle of the night. Super solid erections was a nice side effect but retrograde ejaculation was unsettling.
