How Jynneos works

Jynneos is a live-attenuated vaccine, meaning it contains a weakened version of the vaccinia virus. The vaccine helps your body's immune system make antibodies against the monkeypox and smallpox viruses, which will attack the viruses if they ever infect your body.

Pharmacist tips for Jynneos

pharmacist
  • Read the vaccine information statement for more information on Jynneos.
  • Make sure to keep a record of all your immunizations and show it to your provider or pharmacist before receiving any vaccine, including Jynneos, to make sure you're receiving all your vaccines on schedule.
  • Allow extra time for your Jynneos vaccine appointment if you've had a severe allergic reaction to gentamicin, ciprofloxacin (Cipro), chicken, or eggs in the past. Your provider will monitor you for at least 30 minutes after your vaccine.
  • After your first dose of Jynneos, make sure to schedule your second dose. In order for this vaccine to work well, you need two doses, typically given 4 weeks apart. Let your provider know if you've received a smallpox vaccine in the past, since in this case you might only need one dose of Jynneos.
  • If you miss your second dose, it's recommended to get it as soon as possible. In most cases, you won't need to restart the series or get additional doses.
  • You're considered fully vaccinated against the monkeypox 2 weeks after your second dose of Jynneos. If possible, avoid activities that can put you at risk for monkeypox until that time.
  • If you get a severe reaction to Jynneos, you or your provider can report it to the vaccine adverse event reporting system (VAERS) website or by calling 1-800-822-7967.

Risks and warnings for Jynneos

Jynneos can cause some serious health issues. This risk may be even higher for certain groups. If this worries you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about other options.

Severe allergic reaction

  • Risk factors: History of allergy to gentamicin, ciprofloxacin (Cipro), chicken, or egg

As with any vaccine, there's a rare chance Jynneos can cause a life-threatening allergic reaction, like anaphylaxis. Let your provider know if you have a history of an allergic reaction to gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, chicken, or eggs, since Jynneos might contain these in small amounts. If so, they'll monitor you for 30 minutes after you get your vaccine so they can give you medical care if you do have a reaction. If you experience hives, trouble breathing, or swelling in your face or throat, get medical help right away.

Might not prevent monkeypox or smallpox

  • Risk factors: Weakened immune system

Vaccination with Jynneos doesn't guarantee you won't get smallpox or monkeypox. If you have a weakened immune system from certain medical conditions or medications (e.g., transplant or cancer medications), you might have a lower response to Jynneos. This means the vaccine might not work as well to protect you from getting infected. Avoid contact with those who are infected with smallpox or monkeypox. If someone close to you is infected, avoid sex, kissing, and touching their bodies (especially a rash). If possible, avoid activities that might put you at risk of being exposed until 2 weeks after your second dose of Jynneos.
