Generic Flovent (fluticasone propionate) is an inhaled corticosteroid. It is FDA approved to manage asthma in adults and children age 4 and older. The medication works by reducing lung inflammation, which makes it easier to breathe and can help prevent asthma attacks.

At the start of 2024, the manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) stopped making brand-name Flovent. This impacted two brand-name inhalers: Flovent HFA and Flovent Diskus. Instead, GSK now makes authorized generic versions of the medications: fluticasone propionate HFA and fluticasone propionate Diskus.

Fluticasone propionate HFA is a metered-dose inhaler and fluticasone propionate Diskus is a dry powder inhaler. The typical starting dosage for the HFA inhaler is 88 mcg (two inhalations of 44 mcg) twice per day. The typical starting dosage for the Diskus inhaler is 100 mcg twice a day for people 12 and older. For kids ages 4 to 11, it’s typically 50 mcg twice a day.

What factors affect the price of Flovent?

The cost of generic Flovent depends on several factors, including:

  • Location: Where you live can affect the cost of your prescription medications. For instance, GoodRx research shows that prescription medication prices are generally lower in Denver and Houston than cities like New Orleans and Milwaukee.

  • Pharmacy: Prices for prescription medications can differ between pharmacies in one area, because pharmacies negotiate pricing directly with manufacturers.

  • Insurance: Even if you have an insurance plan that covers generic Flovent, you may still be responsible for deductibles, copayments, and/or coinsurance.

  • Dosage and form: The dosage of your medication and whether you’re prescribed an HFA or Diskus inhaler may also impact the cost.

Does insurance cover Flovent?

Some health insurance plans — including commercial plans and Medicare and Medicaid plans — typically offer coverage for generic medications. However, when generic medications first become available, coverage can be inconsistent across plans. To determine if your insurance covers generic Flovent, review your plan’s formulary (a list of covered medications).

If your plan doesn't cover generic Flovent, here are some actions you can take:

Ways to save on Flovent

Here are four ways to save on generic Flovent, whether or not you have insurance coverage.

1. Compare pharmacy prices in your area

GoodRx can help you easily compare prices for generic Flovent (and other prescription medications) at different pharmacies in your area.

2. Use a GoodRx Coupon

With a free GoodRx coupon, you may be able to reduce what you pay for generic Flovent. For example, you may be able to pay as little as $168.90 for one 110 mcg HFA inhaler at certain pharmacies. And you may be able to pay around $129.69 for a 100 mcg Diskus inhaler.

Here’s how to get a coupon:

  1. Visit www.goodrx.com or download the GoodRx app on your phone or tablet.

  2. Type “Flovent” in the search field and select either “fluticasone propionate HFA” or “fluticasone propionate Diskus” from the drop-down menu.

  3. Choose the correct dose and quantity, and select your location.

  4. Click or tap on “Search prices” to find costs at pharmacies near you.

  5. Choose to receive your coupon via text or email, or print it out.

  6. Show the coupon at the pharmacy when you pick up your prescription. Or, to help prevent delays, present the coupon when you fill your prescription.

3. Request a 90-day supply

Ask your healthcare professional to write you a prescription for a 90-day supply of generic Flovent, instead of a 30-day supply. A 90-day supply may be a better value and save you trips to the pharmacy.

If you have insurance that covers generic Flovent, you can also ask about discounts for using your plan’s mail-order pharmacy.

4. Use your HSA or FSA funds

If you have a flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA), you can use tax-free dollars to pay for your generic Flovent prescription. Generic Flovent and other prescription medications are considered eligible expenses for both FSAs and HSAs. Keep in mind that FSA funds must be used before the end of the plan year, while HSA funds roll over each year and can be used at any time.

The bottom line

Without insurance, one 110 mcg inhaler of generic Flovent HFA (fluticasone propionate HFA) costs an average of about $267.75. The exact amount you’ll pay will depend on your pharmacy, prescribed dosage, location, and other factors. To potentially pay less for generic Flovent, consider requesting a 90-day supply or using a free GoodRx coupon. You can also use GoodRx to compare prices at local pharmacies.
