Typical dosage for Dronabinol

  • Low appetite and weight loss from AIDS: The typical starting dose is 2.5 mg by mouth twice daily, taken 1 hour before lunch and dinner. In general, your prescriber will help adjust your dose based on your needs.

  • Nausea and vomiting from cancer medications: Your prescriber will calculate your dose from your body surface area (BSA, measured in m2). This takes into account your height and weight.

    • The typical starting dose is 5 mg/m2 that's taken by mouth a few times per day. Your prescriber will adjust your dose depending on how well it's helping you and any side effects.
    • Take the first dose on an empty stomach, 1 to 3 hours before chemotherapy. After chemotherapy, take a dose every 2 to 4 hours for up to 4 to 6 doses per day, with or without food.

The dose might be lower for older adults.
