The Johnson & Johnson (J&J/Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine is one of four currently available COVID vaccines in the U.S. All of these vaccines are effective at preventing severe illness and hospitalization.

Below is more information about the J&J vaccine, and where to schedule an appointment near you.

Johnson & Johnson vaccine key takeaways

Here’s what you need to know about the J&J COVID vaccine:

  • It’s a viral vector vaccine given as a single dose to prevent COVID.

  • The FDA has limited its authorization of the J&J vaccine’s use to those who are at least 18 years old AND who can’t or won’t receive another COVID vaccine.

  • Its use is limited due to the risk of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), a rare condition with possibly life-threatening blood clots and low levels of blood platelets.

  • The J&J vaccine has also been linked to a rare neurological disorder called Guillain-Barré syndrome

  • People who received the J&J vaccine can receive any type of booster  2 or more months later. The CDC recommends one of the mRNA bivalent boosters (Pfizer or Moderna) over the J&J booster.
