Updated on October 17, 2023

The updated Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is one of three COVID vaccines currently available in the U.S. The updated 2023-2024 versions of these vaccines are designed to work against a subvariant of the virus called XBB.1.5. These shots have replaced the original and bivalent formulations. All of the updated vaccines can help prevent severe illness and hospitalization from COVID.

Below is more information about the updated Moderna vaccine and where to schedule an appointment near you.

Updated Moderna vaccine key takeaways

Here’s what you need to know about the updated Moderna COVID vaccine:

  • It’s a mRNA vaccine that helps prevent COVID.

  • The FDA approved the updated Moderna vaccine (Spikevax) for use in people who are at least 12 years old. It’s authorized for emergency use in people 6 months through 11 years old.

  • People age 5 and older are eligible to receive 1 updated Moderna dose. Just make sure at least 2 months have passed since your last COVID vaccine (if applicable).

  • Kids ages 6 months through 4 years old are eligible to receive 1 or 2 updated Moderna doses, depending on their vaccination history.
