Chemoprotectants are used to treat and prevent certain side effects of chemotherapy. Chemoprotectants work by shielding your cells from the harmful effects of these treatments, either by neutralizing toxic substances or by enhancing your body's natural defense mechanisms. These medications come in different forms, including oral pills and injections. Examples include mesna (Mesnex), amifostine (Ethyol), and dexrazoxane.
MESNA reduces the risk of bleeding in the bladder caused by ifosfamide, a type of chemotherapy. It works by protecting your bladder from substances in the urine that may irritate it.
AMIFOSTINE reduces the risk of kidney injury caused by cisplatin, a type of chemotherapy. It may also be used to help decrease dryness in the mouth caused by radiation to the head or neck.
PALIFERMIN reduces the risk of severe mouth sores caused by chemotherapy or radiation. It works by promoting the growth of new cells in the lining of your mouth and throat. This protects the lining and may speed wound healing.
