Insurance won’t necessarily cover weight-loss medications like Wegovy (semaglutide). And in some cases, you may need to get a prior authorization or try other medications first. Your plan might have specific requirements for coverage, such as having a certain body mass index and heart disease. Nationally, only 14% of people with commercial insurance have unrestricted coverage of Wegovy. As for Medicare, its Part D prescription drug benefit doesn't currently cover any weight-loss medications when they're used solely for weight loss. If your insurance plan doesn't cover Wegovy, or if your copay is too high, you may be able to use a manufacturer copay card to make your prescription more affordable.
