How Vusion works

Vusion is an ointment that contains miconazole, zinc oxide, and white petrolatum. Miconazole is an antifungal that treats yeast infections by damaging the fungal cell wall. Both zinc oxide and petrolatum create a protective barrier to help prevent friction between the diaper and your baby's skin and protect the skin from moisture that could lead to a diaper rash and infections.

Pharmacist tips for Vusion

pharmacist
  • Continue to use Vusion for the full 7 days, even if you notice improvement.
  • It's not known if using Vusion for more than 7 days is safe. Don't use Vusion for more than 7 days. If you don't see any improvement in 7 days or if the symptoms get worse, let your child's pediatrician know.
  • Wash your hands before and after you apply the medication.
  • Keep the Vusion tube stored at room temperature.
  • Since this ointment contains an antifungal (miconazole), it's important that there is a clear diagnosis of a yeast infection prior to using this medication. If used in the absence of a yeast infection, your child can develop resistance to the medication, which means that Vusion won't work as well or at all in the future for an actual yeast infection.
  • Vusion shouldn't be used to prevent a diaper rash.
  • Vusion shouldn't be used in place of frequent diaper changes. Regular cleaning of the diaper area and frequent diaper changes are still necessary when using Vusion.

Common questions about Vusion

Yes, there's a generic version for Vusion available.

Vusion is made up of miconazole, zinc oxide, and white petrolatum (petroleum jelly). These ingredients work together to treat yeast infections and protect the skin between the diaper and your baby's skin.

You should apply Vusion to your child at every diaper change for up to a week. Don't use it for longer than a week because it's not known if it's safe. If your child's diaper rash doesn't get better after a week, talk with their pediatrician.

Your child's pediatrician will give you directions for Vusion. The typical instruction is to gently clean the affected area with lukewarm (not hot) water and pat the area dry with a soft towel first. Then, using your fingertips, gently apply a thin layer to the affected area. Make sure to not rub the medication into the skin, because this can cause more skin irritation. Wash your hands very well after applying Vusion. Repeat this process at every diaper change.

Don't use scented soaps, wipes, shampoos, or lotions on the diaper area treated with Vusion because they can cause more irritation to the skin.

It's not known if Vusion is safe or works well in adults who wear diapers because it hasn't been studied in this group of people. If you're looking for diaper rash treatment for adults, talk with your healthcare team.
