Tekamlo is a combination of two medications that work together to treat high blood pressure. Aliskiren is a direct renin inhibitor –– it blocks a substance in your body called renin that normally causes your blood vessels to tighten and raise your blood pressure. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that works to relax your blood vessels, resulting in lower blood pressure.
No, Tekamlo has been discontinued and is no longer available.
It's not completely clear why the manufacturer (Novartis) discontinued Tekamlo. But it might've been a precautionary measure related to the FDA's safety warning for blood pressure medications containing aliskiren with ACE inhibitors (e.g., lisinopril (Prinivil)) and ARBs (e.g., losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan)). This safety warning came from a study that showed a higher risk of kidney problems, high potassium levels, and low blood pressure in certain people taking aliskiren along with an ACE inhibitor or ARB to treat high blood pressure compared to people taking an ACE inhibitor or ARB alone. This study led Novartis to discontinue their aliskiren-containing combination medication Valturna (aliskiren / valsartan).
