Frequently asked questions about Ser-Ap-Es

What is Ser-Ap-Es ?
Ser-Ap-Es is made up of three medications that all lower your blood pressure. Hydralazine is a vasodilator that relaxes blood vessels, causing them to open up (dilate). Hydrochlorothiazide (Microzide) (HCTZ), is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that works in the kidneys to remove extra water, which lowers blood pressure and gets rid of swelling. Reserpine is a Rauwolfia alkaloid that works by lowering the levels of certain chemicals in your body that can raise your blood pressure.
Is Ser-Ap-Es still available?
No, Ser-Ap-Es has been discontinued and is no longer available in the United States. Although it's not exactly clear why Ser-Ap-Es has been discontinued, it's probably because newer medications are available.
What are examples of currently available medications that are used in place of Ser-Ap-Es ?
While reserpine as a single-ingredient medication has also been discontinued, both hydralazine and hydrochlorothiazide (Microzide) are still available today on their own as well as part of a combination of other medications. There are also many available medications commonly used today for the treatment of high blood pressure.
