Nearly 3 million U.S. adults have been diagnosed with epilepsy, a brain disorder that’s characterized by repeated seizures. While having a seizure doesn’t always mean you have epilepsy, this condition is the most common cause of seizures.

Lamictal (lamotrigine) is a commonly prescribed medication for seizures. This antiepileptic (antiseizure) medication is believed to affect chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) in the brain that cause seizures.

In addition to epilepsy, Lamictal is also FDA-approved to treat bipolar 1 disorder in adults.

Is Lamictal typically covered by insurance?

Many health insurance plans, including Medicare Part D, cover antiepileptic medications. However, brand-name medications may not be covered, and they tend to cost more than generic medications.

Medicare Part D plans do not cover brand-name Lamictal or Lamictal XR, but will cover lamotrigine. Most plans also will cover lamotrigine ER.

If you have insurance, check your plan's summary of benefits and coverage and formulary — its list of covered medications — to determine whether brand-name Lamictal or its generic, lamotrigine, are covered.

Tips if Lamictal isn’t covered by your insurance

Here are a few options if your insurance does not cover brand-name Lamictal:

How much does Lamictal cost without insurance?

If you don’t have health insurance, the retail price of brand-name Lamictal depends on the following factors:

  • Daily dosage

  • Fill amount — 90-day supply vs. 30-day supply

  • Geographic location

  • Pharmacy used

  • Taking Lamictal can have side effects. Some common side effects are mild, such as dizziness, but the medication can also cause rare, but serious, side effects such as suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

  • Lamictal can have sexual side effects. As a result of taking this medication, you may experience a loss of desire or an increase in your sex drive and orgasm quality.

  • Avoid foods that may cause negative reactions. Though food and drink interactions are rare, some can increase your risk of having a seizure while taking Lamictal.

How to afford Lamictal

If you’re prescribed brand-name Lamictal, first talk to your prescriber about trying generic lamotrigine. The generic version may be covered by your insurance plan even if the brand-name isn’t. And if you don’t have insurance, the generic version still costs less than the brand-name in most cases.

Whichever version of the medication you choose, here are ways to save on the cost:

1. Use a GoodRx coupon

With a GoodRx coupon, you may be able to pay a lower price for your prescription.

Here’s how to get a coupon:

  • Visit www.goodrx.com or install the GoodRx app on your mobile device.

  • Type “Lamictal” in the search field and select either “Lamictal (brand)” or  “Lamictal (generic)” from the drop-down menu.

  • Choose the correct dosage and quantity, and make sure your location is correct.

  • Click on “Search prices” to find costs at pharmacies near you.

  • Select the pharmacy where you want your prescription filled, and choose to text, email, or print the coupon.

  • Show the coupon at the pharmacy when you fill or pick up your Lamictal prescription.

2. Request a 90-day supply

Ask your prescriber to write you a prescription for a 90-day supply of Lamictal, instead of a 30-day supply, and compare costs. Getting a 3-month supply may be a better value than filling your prescription every month. This can lower your overall costs and reduce your trips to the pharmacy. If your insurance covers Lamictal, ask about discounts for using your plan’s mail-order pharmacy.

3. Compare prices at various pharmacies

GoodRx can easily compare cash prices and GoodRx prices at different pharmacies to help you find the best Lamictal or lamotrigine price in your area.

4. Talk to your prescriber about alternatives

If you’re concerned about the cost of your prescription, tell your prescriber. You might be able to take a lower-cost generic version or another medication that adequately treats your condition and better fits your budget.

5. Use your HSA or FSA funds

If you have a health savings account (HSA) or a flexible spending account (FSA), you can save on your Lamictal prescription. An HSA or FSA reduces your out-of-pocket costs through tax savings.

The bottom line

Without insurance, 30 tablets of 100 mg brand-name Lamictal may cost $485.40. Meanwhile, 30 tablets of 100 mg generic Lamictal (called lamotrigine) could cost as little as $45.85 without insurance. The price you pay will depend on your dosage, where you live, and which pharmacy you choose. You also may be able to save on your medication by using a patient assistance program, getting a 90-day supply instead of a 30-day supply, or asking your doctor about lower-cost alternatives.
