What Are Nasal Polyps?

Comprehensive information for you or a loved one — including treatment options and discounts on popular medications.

Nasal polyps are painless growths inside of the nasal passage. They are typically non-cancerous. Although the cause is not clear, nasal polyps are associated with conditions that trigger inflammation in the nose, like asthma, allergic sinusitis, and Churg-Strauss syndrome. Symptoms include runny nose, decreased sense of smell, prolonged nasal congestion, and loss of taste.

Treatment for nasal polyps include nasal sprays and oral medications. Common drug classes used to treat nasal polyps include corticosteroids (FlonaseVeramystNasonex) or antihistamines (ClaritinBenadrylAstelin). Prevention is also important. Managing your allergies or asthma, practicing good hygiene, and humidifying your home can help prevent against nasal polyps.
