For Nikki Nurse, who is living with Type 2 diabetes, it’s all about portion control.

She doesn’t deny herself sweet treats, but instead enjoys them in small portions by buying miniature versions or having just a spoonful.

Nurse’s favorite portion control tool is her set of plates that are divided to allow for portions of food. In the largest section, she may serve herself vegetables or salads. In the smaller spaces, she might serve herself proteins and carbohydrates.

“There are going to be a lot of dishes that you might want to engage in,” she says, “[and] you can still definitely add it to your plate, but remember the portion.”
