Key takeaways:

  • Most Mylanta products contain a combination of antacids with an antigas medication. But be sure to read the package carefully, as specific ingredients and instructions vary between products.

  • A typical adult Mylanta dosage for liquid formulations is 10 mL to 20 mL between meals or at bedtime as needed. Mylanta shouldn’t be given to children under 12 years old without a healthcare provider’s OK.

  • Talk to a healthcare provider before taking Mylanta if you’re pregnant, have kidney problems, or follow a magnesium-restricted diet.

  • Mylanta products are available over the counter (OTC) as brand-name medications. But you can also find them as lower-cost generics. If your healthcare provider writes you a prescription for OTC Mylanta, GoodRx can help save you money.

Sometimes, the joy of indulging in a favorite food comes with digestive consequences, such as heartburn or bloating. Luckily, a quick trip to the pharmacy can usually help set things right again.

Mylanta is a popular line of over-the-counter (OTC) products that treat heartburn symptoms and gas. They contain a combination of one or more antacids or anti-gas medications.

Each Mylanta product may have different amounts of each medication or different instructions. This can make it confusing to know how much to take. So, we’ve put together a guide reviewing the adult Mylanta dosages for each product.

What’s the typical Mylanta dosage for adults?

Adolescents 12 years and older can follow the adult dosage instructions for all Mylanta products. For younger children, talk to a healthcare provider about safe options for treating heartburn or gas. Some of the medications in Mylanta may be available at lower doses for kids under other brand names, like Mylicon (simethicone) or Pepto Kids (calcium carbonate).

If you’re taking a liquid Mylanta product, be sure to shake the bottle well before each use. You should also only use the dosing cup provided by the manufacturer to measure out doses.

Mylanta Maximum Strength

Mylanta Maximum Strength (aluminum hydroxide / magnesium hydroxide / simethicone) treats heartburn and gas symptoms. It comes as a liquid in either a lemon-mint or vanilla-caramel flavor. Each 10 mL of liquid contains 800 mg of aluminum hydroxide, 800 mg of magnesium hydroxide, and 80 mg of simethicone.

The adult Mylanta Maximum Strength dosage is:

  • Take 10 mL to 20 mL between meals or at bedtime as needed.

  • Don’t take more than 60 mL in 24 hours.

  • Don’t take the maximum dosage for more than 2 weeks in a row without talking to your healthcare provider.

Mylanta Tonight

Mylanta Tonight (calcium carbonate / magnesium hydroxide / simethicone) treats heartburn and gas symptoms. It comes as a honey-chamomile-flavored liquid. Each 10 mL of liquid contains 800 mg of calcium carbonate, 270 mg of magnesium hydroxide, and 80 mg of simethicone.

The adult Mylanta Tonight dosage is:

  • Take 10 to 20 mL between meals or at bedtime as needed.

  • Don’t take more than 60 mL in 24 hours.

  • Don’t take the maximum dosage for more than 2 weeks in a row without talking to your healthcare provider.

Mylanta Coat & Cool

Mylanta Coat & Cool (calcium carbonate / magnesium hydroxide / simethicone) treats heartburn and gas symptoms. It comes as a mint-chocolate-flavored liquid. Each 10 mL of liquid contains 1,200 mg of calcium carbonate, 270 mg of magnesium hydroxide, and 80 mg of simethicone.

The adult Mylanta Coat & Cool dosage is:

  • Take 10 to 20 mL between meals or at bedtime as needed.

  • Don’t take more than 60 mL in 24 hours.

  • Don’t take the maximum dosage for more than 2 weeks in a row without talking to your healthcare provider.

Mylanta ONE

Mylanta ONE (calcium carbonate / magnesium hydroxide / simethicone) treats heartburn and gas symptoms. It comes as a single-dose chewable tablet. Each tablet contains 1,000 mg of calcium carbonate, 270 mg of magnesium hydroxide, and 80 mg of simethicone.

The adult Mylanta ONE dosage is:

  • Chew 1 tablet as needed for symptoms.

  • Don’t take more than 6 tablets in 24 hours.

  • Don’t take the maximum dosage for more than 2 weeks in a row without talking to your healthcare provider.

Mylanta Gas Minis

Unlike the other formulations, Mylanta Gas Minis (simethicone) don’t treat heartburn. Instead, it just treats bloating and discomfort due to gas. Each chewable tablet contains 125 mg of simethicone. It comes in three flavor options: mint, cherry, and assorted fruit.

The adult Mylanta Gas Minis dosage is:

  • Chew 3 to 6 tablets as needed.

  • Don’t take more than 12 tablets in 24 hours.

Are there any dosage adjustments for certain people?

There are a few situations where you may need to take a lower dose of Mylanta or avoid it altogether. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking Mylanta if any of the following apply to you.

Kidney problems

Your kidneys play a role in balancing the minerals and electrolytes in your body. Most Mylanta products can add extra calcium or magnesium to your body. This can sometimes disrupt your electrolyte balance if your kidneys aren’t working properly. If you have kidney problems, your healthcare provider may recommend a lower dose of Mylanta, or they may recommend avoiding it entirely.

Magnesium-restricted diet

Some health conditions make it more difficult for your body to manage its magnesium level. Most Mylanta products contain the antacid magnesium hydroxide, which adds extra magnesium to your diet. If your healthcare provider has told you to follow a diet low in magnesium, it may be best to avoid Mylanta products when treating heartburn. Talk about other options with your provider or pharmacist.

Pregnancy

Heartburn is common during pregnancy. But if you’re pregnant, talk to your healthcare provider about which OTC antacids are safe. Some of the ingredients in Mylanta products, like aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide, may need to be avoided.

What happens if you miss a dose of Mylanta?

Since Mylanta products are taken only when needed for symptoms, you won’t have to worry about missing doses. Just pay attention to the daily maximum amount listed on the package. And don’t take extra medication to make up for doses that you forgot to take.

What should you do if you take too much Mylanta?

Taking an extra dose of Mylanta by accident is unlikely to be harmful for most people. But the antacids included in most Mylanta products can be dangerous if taken in very high amounts. Symptoms can range from diarrhea to problems with your heartbeat. If you or a loved one has taken too much Mylanta, contact your healthcare provider. You can also reach out to Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for guidance.

How to save on Mylanta

There are many ways to save on Mylanta products, which are available as both brand-name and generic medications. By having your healthcare provider write a prescription for OTC Mylanta, GoodRx can help you save. Generic Mylanta's price at certain pharmacies is as low as $4.87 with a free GoodRx discount.

The bottom line

Mylanta is a popular brand of OTC medications for treating heartburn and gas. The adult Mylanta dosage for the liquid versions is 10 mL to 20 mL by mouth between meals or at bedtime. But be sure to read the package directions carefully. All products have different medications in varying amounts.
