After a fellowship, Dr. Sample worked as the medical director at the University of Kansas Hospital Poison Center (The University Of Kansas Health System Poison Control Center), which served the state of Kansas for poison exposures. In 2007, she returned to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, as a consultant in clinical pharmacology and medical toxicology. In 2012, she was promoted to chief of the toxicology section and later became the chief for the Division of Clinical Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutic Innovations.
During her more than 20 years of practice, Dr. Sample developed several programs, including the Adverse Drug Reaction Surveillance Service and the Individualized Pediatric Therapeutics Program (GOLDILOKs® Clinic | Children’s Mercy Kansas City (childrensmercy.org)). Dr. Sample also served as the director of the Mid-America Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (Mid-America Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (MAPEHSU) | Children’s Mercy Kansas City (childrensmercy.org)) for Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska.
Since leaving academic medicine in 2019, Dr. Sample started her own consulting company, PediaTox LLC (Toxicology Consulting | PediaTox, LLC). She currently practices as a part-time general pediatrician in addition to her consulting work.
Dr. Sample has been the chair of the Council on Environmental Health for the American Academy of Pediatrics ( www.aap.org ) and a board member for the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology ( www.clintox.org ). She continues to be an active member for both organizations. She has also served on committees for the Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
After obtaining her medical degree, Dr. Sample completed a pediatric residency at Children’s Mercy Hospital (Children’s Mercy Kansas City | Children’s Mercy Kansas City (childrensmercy.org)) in Kansas City, Missouri. She then completed a fellowship in clinical pharmacology and medical toxicology at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. During her more than 20 years at Children’s Mercy, Dr. Sample was promoted to professor of pediatrics at the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine (UMKC School of Medicine).
