Research on nutrients and cognitive function
In 2017, nearly 40% of Americans aged 60 years and older used a multivitamin or multimineral product. To better understand how a complete multivitamin could support cognitive health in older adults, researchers working with the COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS) ran three separate, randomized clinical trials. These trials studied the effect daily use of Centrum Silver had on memory and cognitive function among older adults (ages 60 and older). Researchers measured participants’ performance at the start of the clinical trial, and then every year following using either telephone-based, computer-based, or in-person tests.
In 2022, the results of the first trial (COSMOS-Mind) showed that in over 2,000 adults, those who took Centrum Silver Multivitamin tablets daily for 3 years had greater performance on the telephone-based cognitive tests than those who received the placebo (a pill with no active ingredients). These tests measured their overall cognitive function, memory, and executive function.
Results from the second trial, COSMOS-Web, were released in 2023. This trial focused on memory and it showed that in over 3,500 older adults, those who took Centrum Silver Multivitamin tablets daily for 3 years had greater performance on the computer-based memory test than those taking a placebo.
The latest trial, COSMOS-Clinic, was published in 2024 and included over 500 older adults (aged 60 years and over) who took either Centrum Silver Multivitamin tablets or a placebo daily. Like COSMOS-Mind, they measured overall cognitive function, memory, and executive function using in-person testing. In this study, people who took Centrum Silver Multivitamin tablets had greater performance on the memory tests than those taking a placebo after 2 years. They also looked at the data across all three of the studies combined and found that there were clear benefits to cognitive function and memory in older adults who took Centrum Silver Multivitamin tablets.
