Over 8 years ago (when I was an intern) a generic for Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo was released. Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo was already one of the most popular birth control options in the early 2000s, and it’s still used by many, many women today—so a generic was big news.
As the only generic option at the time, Tri-Lo Sprintec quickly became a favorite, especially since co-pays and cash prices were drastically lower than brand-name Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo.
However, Tri-Lo Sprintec was not on the market very long before it was hastily pulled from pharmacy shelves—leaving many women angry, upset, and confused. It’s important to note that Tri-Lo Sprintec wasn’t pulled due to safety concerns, but rather because of a patent infringement battle between brand manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals and the generic manufacturer Teva Pharmaceuticals.
Tri-Lo Sprintec seemed to have disappeared, until its recent resurfacing. Tri-Lo Sprintec is once again on the market; however, this time it’s just one of the many generics available for Ortho-Tri Cyclen Lo.
Teva, Lupin, and Mylan Pharmaceuticals are three of the generic manufacturing companies bringing their versions of Ortho-Tri Cyclen Lo to the market. Look for Tri-Lo Sprintec back from Teva, Tri-Lo Marzia from Lupin, and norgestimate/ethinyl estradiol from Mylan.
