Frequently asked questions about Ticlopidine

What is ticlopidine?
Ticlopidine is an antiplatelet medication. It stops cells in your blood called platelets from sticking together. Normally, platelets stick together and form blood clots to help stop bleeding where you get injured. But sometimes these clots form in places that block blood from traveling to other parts of your body. This can lead to life-threatening stroke and other serious health problems. By stopping platelets from sticking together, ticlopidine helps your blood flow normally and lower your risk of stroke and other complications of abnormal blood clotting.
Is ticlopidine still available?
No, ticlopidine is no longer available as a brand or generic medication in the United States.
Why was ticlopidine discontinued?
It's unclear why ticlopidine was discontinued, but it has a risk of very serious blood problems. In recent years, it hasn’t been commonly used, since safer and more affordable options are available.
