Typical dosage for Tenivac

The Td vaccine is given as an injection into the upper arm muscle by a healthcare professional.

Talk to a healthcare professional about vaccination with the Td vaccine for your specific situation. In general:

  • Primary series: For people who haven't completed their tetanus or diphtheria vaccinations, the manufacturer recommends a 3-dose series. The first 2 doses are given 2 months apart. The third dose is given 6 to 8 months after the second dose.

  • Routine booster: The Td vaccine can be given as 1 injection every 10 years when a Td booster is needed. Your healthcare professional can help decide whether you should get a Td or Tdap vaccine.

  • After certain wounds: The Td vaccine can be given as 1 injection to help prevent tetanus. Whether you need the Td vaccine, tetanus immune globulin, or both depends on the wound and your vaccination history. The medical team will decide what you need.

  • After exposure to diphtheria: The Td vaccine can be given as 1 injection in certain cases. This includes if you haven't completed your diphtheria vaccinations or don't know your vaccination history. It also includes if you haven't received a diphtheria vaccine within the last 5 years.
