What is Talacen (pentazocine / acetaminophen)?
Talacen (pentazocine / acetaminophen) is a combination of two pain-relieving medications. Pentazocine is an opioid that works on opioid receptors to change the way your brain and nervous system recognize and respond to pain. This lowers the amount of pain you feel. Acetaminophen is an analgesic that relieves pain by stopping the production of certain chemicals in the brain that cause pain.

Why was Talacen (pentazocine / acetaminophen) discontinued?
It's not clear why Talacen (pentazocine / acetaminophen) was discontinued. In 2011, the FDA issued a safety communication limiting prescription medications that contained acetaminophen to 325 mg per dosage unit. At this time, Talacen (pentazocine / acetaminophen) was affected because each tablet contained 650 mg of acetaminophen.
