Save on related medications

Rinvoq (upadacitinib) is a prescription-only medication used to treat a range of chronic inflammatory conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ulcerative colitis (UC). It’s a  targeted therapy that’s taken once daily. And it has helped many people manage difficult-to-treat symptoms and improve their quality of life.

But like many specialty medications, the cost of Rinvoq can be high, especially for those without insurance or with limited coverage. Understanding what you might pay — and how to save — is a key part of starting treatment.

How much does Rinvoq cost?

Without insurance or discounts, 30 tablets of Rinvoq 15 mg cost an average of $9804.44. This quantity and dose equals a 30-day supply for most adults. However, for some health conditions, there’s a higher initial dosage of 45 mg daily for 2 to 3 months. This is followed by a maintenance dosage of 15 mg or 30 mg daily.

Rinvoq is also available as a 1 mg/mL oral solution for children, under the brand name Rinvoq LQ. A 30-day supply is typically either 1 or 2 bottles, depending on your child’s body weight. One bottle of Rinvoq LQ costs an average of $4975.30. Two bottles cost an average of $13618.63.

Rinvoq and Rinvoq LQ are brand-name medications. As of right now, no generic versions are available. Here are the average retail prices for common quantities and doses.

What factors affect the cost of Rinvoq?

Several factors can affect how much you’ll pay for Rinvoq, including:

  • Insurance: Coverage for Rinvoq can vary across insurance plans. Coverage requirements, such as prior authorization and step therapy, and copay tiers can all impact how much you pay.

  • Health conditions: Some insurance plans may cover Rinvoq more readily for specific FDA-approved health conditions, such as RA.

  • Dosage and formulation: Your dosage can affect how much you pay for Rinvoq. And with some health conditions, the dosage can change after the first few months. For children taking the oral solution, the dosage is usually based on their body weight, which can also change over time.

  • Discounts: If you’re eligible, a manufacturer copay savings card, rebate, or patient assistance program could help you pay less for Rinvoq. You could also save money using a discount from GoodRx, regardless of your insurance status.

  • Pharmacy: Rinvoq is a specialty medication. This means it may only be available through certain pharmacies that contract with your insurer or Rinvoq’s manufacturer. Prices for the medication may vary depending on pharmacy contracts, location, and insurance networks.

Does insurance cover Rinvoq?

Many commercial and government-sponsored insurance plans cover Rinvoq. But coverage can vary depending on the health condition and plan details. In most cases, plans require prior authorization, meaning your prescriber will have to show that Rinvoq is medically necessary. You may also have to do step therapy, or try other treatments, before Rinvoq is covered.

If your insurance doesn’t cover Rinvoq, try these options:

  • Check if you’re eligible for the manufacturer copay savings card or rebate. You may qualify for reduced out-of-pocket costs if you have commercial insurance (details below).

  • Talk to your prescriber about alternatives. There may be other targeted treatments for your health condition that are more likely to be covered by your plan or have generic versions available.

  • Request a formulary exception. Your prescriber can submit a letter of medical necessity explaining why Rinvoq is the best option for you. If your request is denied, you have the right to file an appeal.

  • Compare plans during open enrollment. You may be able to switch to a plan that offers better coverage for Rinvoq or similar medications, with lower out-of-pocket costs.

Specialty pharmacies often have dedicated staff members who can help assess your medication coverage and savings eligibility. You can also enroll in Rinvoq Complete, which will connect you with a nurse ambassador for one-on-one support.

Ways to save on Rinvoq

Without insurance, Rinvoq can cost thousands of dollars per month. But there are savings strategies that can help reduce how much you pay for Rinvoq — or even allow you to get it for free. Here are five options to consider.

1. Use a GoodRx coupon

It’s worth checking the GoodRx website or app to see if there are available savings on Rinvoq at your specialty pharmacy. With a free GoodRx coupon, you could pay the following price for your prescription.

2. See if you qualify for a copay savings card or rebate

If you have commercial or employer-sponsored insurance, you may be eligible for a copay savings card or rebate from Rinvoq’s manufacturer. Either of these options could significantly reduce your out-of-pocket costs for the medication — possibly to as little as $0 per month. Here’s how the two options compare.

3. Check if you’re eligible for a patient assistance program

If you don’t have insurance, you may qualify for free medication through a patient assistance program from Rinvoq’s manufacturer. The myAbbVie Assist program offers Rinvoq at no cost to eligible people who:

  • Are uninsured or underinsured

  • Live in the U.S. or a U.S. territory

  • Meet certain income requirements

To qualify, you’ll need to complete an application with help from your healthcare team. Applications can be submitted online or by mail or fax. Check your eligibility here.

If you have Medicare, you may qualify for assistance through the Medicare Extra Help program.

4. Ask about a 90-day supply

In most cases, Rinvoq is meant to be taken as a long-term, ongoing treatment. Once you’re taking an established maintenance dosage, ask your pharmacy or insurance provider about filling a 90-day supply instead of monthly supplies. This can reduce the number of copays you have and save you on out-of-pocket costs.

5. Tap into your HSA or FSA

If you have an HSA or FSA, you can use those pretax dollars to help pay for Rinvoq. This can help make your treatment more affordable through tax savings.

You can also use your account to pay for healthcare professional visits, lab tests, and coinsurance payments related to your treatment. Just be sure to keep receipts or documentation of your expenses in case your HSA or FSA administrator requires proof of eligibility.

The bottom line

Rinvoq (upadacitinib) is a valuable treatment option for many autoimmune and inflammatory health conditions. But it can be costly. Without insurance, 30 tablets of Rinvoq 15 mg cost an average of $9804.44. One bottle of Rinvoq LQ costs an average of $4975.30

The good news is that there are several ways to lower your out-of-pocket costs, including copay savings cards or rebates, patient assistance programs, and discounts through GoodRx.

If your insurance doesn’t adequately cover Rinvoq or you’re uninsured, talk to your healthcare team about your options. With the right resources and support, you may be able to access Rinvoq at a more affordable price.

Methodology

We obtained national prescription coverage data for each medication from Managed Markets Insight & Technology (MMIT). The data reflects health insurance coverage as of September 2025.

We calculated the percentage of enrollees in plans that cover each medication by dividing the number of enrollees covered for the medication within a specific insurance channel (e.g., ACA, Medicare, Medicaid) by the total number of enrollees in all plans within that channel.

We determined the percentage of enrollees in plans with a prior authorization requirement by calculating the proportion of enrollees in plans that required prior authorization for the medication within each channel.

Finally, we measured the percentage of enrollees in plans with a step therapy requirement by calculating the proportion of enrollees in plans that imposed step therapy requirements for the medication in each channel.

These estimates, derived from national MMIT coverage data, provide insight into health insurance coverage for each medication. They take into account restrictions such as prior authorization, step therapy, and quantity limits. The percentages are expressed relative to the total number of enrollees covered by various insurance channels, including ACA plans, commercial (excluding ACA) plans, Medicare, and Medicaid (both state-run and managed care plans).
