If you have trouble falling or staying asleep, you may want to talk to your healthcare team about treatment options. In addition to good sleep hygiene, they may discuss medications. Quviviq (daridorexant) is one of them.

Quviviq is a prescription medication that’s approved to treat insomnia, whether you have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. It’s one of several newer medications called orexin receptor antagonists. Quviviq is a controlled substance, but it may have a lower risk of dependence compared with other sleeping pills, like Ambien (zolpidem).

When you’re prescribed Quviviq, you’ll be given instructions for your dosage. This may depend on other medications you’re taking and your health history. Below, we cover Quviviq dosages and the factors that influence them.

What’s the typical Quviviq dosage for insomnia?

Quviviq is available as an oral tablet in two doses: 25 mg and 50 mg. The usual Quviviq dosage for adults is 25 mg or 50 mg by mouth, taken within 30 minutes of bedtime. It’s intended to be taken every night, unlike some other sleep aids, which are taken as needed.

It’s best to avoid taking Quviviq with food. Food can delay the effects of Quviviq and leave you tossing and turning when you try to sleep.

Before taking Quviviq, plan to sleep at least 7 hours after taking your dose. Otherwise, you may be more likely to feel sleepy and less alert the next day.

Quviviq is approved only for adults. It has not been studied for use in those under age 18.

Are there any dose adjustments for health conditions or interactions?

Your prescriber will consider other medications you’re taking and your health history when deciding on your Quviviq dose.

Health conditions

If you have moderate liver impairment, the recommended Quviviq dose is 25 mg. Quviviq is not recommended if you have severe liver impairment. Your prescriber can help determine your liver health and whether Quviviq is right for you.

Interactions

Drug interactions are common with Quviviq. Quviviq is broken down by certain proteins (enzymes) in your liver. Taking it with other medications that affect these proteins can result in higher or lower Quviviq levels in the body.

Some medications that cause higher Quviviq levels should be avoided altogether with Quviviq. Examples of these include antifungals, like itraconazole (Sporanox) and ketoconazole, and antivirals, like ritonavir (Norvir, which is part of Paxlovid).

Some medications can cause higher Quviviq levels, but you can still take them with the lower dose of Quviviq. In this case, the maximum recommended Quviviq dose is 25 mg. Examples of these medications include:

  • Diltiazem (Cardizem)

  • Dronedarone (Multaq)

  • Fluconazole (Diflucan)

  • Verapamil (Calan)

Conversely, some medications and supplements cause your body to break down and remove Quviviq more quickly. In this case, Quviviq likely won’t be effective for sleep. So these medications should be avoided with Quviviq. Examples include:

  • Carbamazepine (Tegretol)

  • Phenytoin (Dilantin)

  • Rifampin (Rifadin)

  • Phenobarbital (Luminal)

  • St. John’s wort

These are just some examples of interactions. Keep your healthcare team up to date on your medications and health conditions. This can help them decide which Quviviq dose is right for you.

What happens if you miss a dose of Quviviq?

If you wake up in the middle of the night and realize you forgot to take Quviviq, don’t take your dose unless you plan to sleep at least 7 more hours.

Keep in mind, Quviviq should be taken only around bedtime. You shouldn’t take your dose in the morning if you realize you missed your dose the night before. Continue with your regular schedule, and take your next dose within 30 minutes of bedtime.

Several tools can help you remember to take your medications. If you’re having trouble remembering to take Quviviq before bed, set a calendar alert or use a medication reminder app to help you stay on track.

Keep in mind: If you are regularly falling asleep without Quviviq, talk to your prescriber about whether you need to continue taking it.

What should you do if you take too much Quviviq?

There’s limited information on the risks of taking too much Quviviq. But it may increase the medication’s side effects, such as drowsiness. Symptoms such as muscle weakness, sleep paralysis, and headache have also been reported.

If you think you may have taken too much Quviviq, contact your healthcare team right away. You can also call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for guidance. If your symptoms feel severe or life-threatening, call 911 or have someone take you to the ER.
