Key takeaways:

  • Qsymia (phentermine / topiramate ER) is an oral weight-loss pill that’s FDA approved for use in certain adults and adolescents ages 12 and older.

  • In late June 2024, the FDA approved the first Qsymia generic. It officially launched in the U.S. on May 7, 2025.

  • Generic medications are priced at a discount compared with their brand-name counterparts. You may be able to switch to generic Qsymia if it helps you save money on your prescription.

  • There are ways to save on both generic and brand-name Qsymia. GoodRx can help you access Qsymia at an exclusive cash price of $149.10. Discounts are also available for the generic version.

There’s a growing list of FDA-approved prescription medications for long-term weight management, from oral pills to injections. But for many people, cost can be a barrier to accessing and taking them over time. And for most options, lower-cost generics are years away.

However, a generic version of the weight-loss pill Qsymia (phentermine / topiramate ER) was approved in 2024 and launched in the U.S. in 2025. Here’s everything you need to know.

The FDA approved the first Qsymia generic in June 2024

On June 25, 2024, the FDA approved the first generic version of Qsymia. Qsymia is an oral weight-loss medication approved for certain adults and adolescents ages 12 and older.

The first Qsymia generic launched in May 2025

Even though the FDA approved a generic version of Qsymia in 2024, it couldn’t launch right away. But, as of May 7, 2025, the first Qsymia generic is now available in the U.S. It’s sold as phentermine and topiramate extended-release (ER) capsules.

Keep in mind that it can take some time for your pharmacy to have generic Qsymia in stock. If you’re interested in switching to generic Qsymia, ask a pharmacist about your options and when they expect to have it available.

You may be able to save money with generic Qsymia

Generic medications are priced at a discount compared with their brand-name counterparts. And in many cases, generic medications are preferred over brand-name medications on insurance formularies (list of covered medications).

Now that generic Qsymia is available, check with your insurance plan to see if the medication is covered or if a prior authorization is needed. You may be able to save more money by switching to generic Qsymia. Or the brand-name medication may be less expensive based on your plan and eligibility for savings.

It’s also a good idea to check GoodRx, which can help you find ways to save on your prescription. With a free GoodRx coupon, the price of generic Qsymia is as low as $69.06 at certain pharmacies. And don’t forget that a pharmacist or pharmacy technician can also help you get the best price on your prescription.

Good to know: First generics are eligible for a 6-month exclusivity period as the only generic version on the market. After 6 months, other generics may be released. More generics on the market help boost competition, which can lower prices even more.

There are ways to save on brand-name Qsymia

Want to stick with brand-name Qsymia? The best way to save on Qsymia is by using your insurance. But not all plans cover weight-loss medications. In this case, there are a few other ways to save on brand-name Qsymia.

  • GoodRx discounts: Anyone with a valid prescription, regardless of insurance status, can use GoodRx to purchase a 30-day supply of Qsymia at an exclusive cash price of $149.10.

  • Manufacturer copay cards: If you’re eligible, you could pay as little as $70 for Qsymia with a copay card if the medication is covered by your insurance.

  • Home delivery: If you’re paying cash for Qsymia, you could pay as little as $98 for your medication through the Qsymia Engage home-delivery program.

The bottom line

Qsymia (phentermine / topiramate ER) is an oral weight-loss medication. In June 2024, the FDA approved the first Qsymia generic. It officially launched in the U.S. on May 7, 2025.

Now that generic Qsymia is available, you can work with your insurance plan and pharmacist to see if it can help you save money on your prescription.
