Frequently asked questions about Ocriplasmin

What is ocriplasmin?
Ocriplasmin is a medication injected into the eye to treat symptomatic vitreomacular adhesion. This is an eye condition where the vitreous (jelly part of the eye) attaches to the macula (central part of the eye) and pulls on it. This can negatively affect your vision and can potentially lead to vision loss. Ocriplasmin is an enzyme that works by dissolving the proteins that cause the attachment between the vitreous and macula.
Is ocriplasmin still available?
No, ocriplasmin was discontinued by the manufacturer.
Why was ocriplasmin discontinued?
Ocriplasmin was discontinued due to business reasons in May 2020.
Are there any alternatives to ocriplasmin?
Ocriplasmin was one of the few nonsurgical options for symptomatic vitreomacular adhesion. Besides close monitoring by your provider, an alternative to ocriplasmin is eye surgery (vitrectomy). Ask your provider about other options and their risks and benefits.
