Frequently asked questions about Eptifibatide

What is eptifibatide used for?
Eptifibatide is used to prevent blood clots from forming. It's used for adults who are in the hospital receiving heart attack treatment with medications. It can also be used in adults receiving percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI, a procedure to open clogged blood vessels). Preventing blood clots from forming helps lower the risk of more heart attacks or other complications from happening while you receive heart attack treatment or the procedure.
How does eptifibatide work?
Eptifibatide is an antiplatelet. Platelets are blood cells that form clots to help stop any bleeding. But clots can be dangerous if they form in your blood vessels since they can block bloodflow, which can lead to a heart attack and other complications. By preventing your platelets from clumping together in your blood, eptifibatide prevents blood clots from forming. This can help lower your risk of complications, such as heart attack or clot formation in a stent (stent thrombosis) during PCI.
How is eptifibatide given?
Eptifibatide is given as an injection through the veins (intravenous, IV) by a trained healthcare provider in the hospital. They will make sure you get the medication at the right dose and time. In general, you'll receive one or two quick IV injections of eptifibatide to get your blood medication levels high in a short amount of time. You'll also receive a continuous IV infusion to keep medication levels stable in your body. For people who will not receive PCI, the infusion will continue until you leave the hospital or until you undergo heart surgery if it's needed, and up to 3 days. For people who will receive PCI, the infusion will continue for up to 24 hours after the procedure or until you leave the hospital, whichever is first.
Will I receive eptifibatide by itself?
No, eptifibatide is typically given with a heparin IV infusion. These two medications work together to prevent blood clots from forming.
What are the side effects of eptifibatide?
Since eptifibatide is a blood thinner, the most common side effect is bleeding. Some people also experience low blood pressure. While you're in the hospital, your provider will monitor you closely for signs of bleeding and check your blood pressure during treatment with eptifibatide.
