Bile Acid Synthesis Disorder

Comprehensive information for you or a loved one — including treatment options and discounts on popular medications.

Bile acid synthesis disorders occur when the body lacks the enzymes needed to process cholesterol from the liver into cholic acid. This can result in a build up of potentially harmful by-products in the liver and other organs, and malnutrition from lack of absorption of fat and fat-soluble vitamins.

This is a rare condition, but treatment can include replacement of the missing bile acids.
