Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is a genetic disorder where the body doesn't produce enough of the protein alpha-1 antitrypsin (also known as alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor), which helps prevent breakdown of tissues in the lungs. This deficiency can lead to emphysema, and while it can't be cured, replacement of the protein can maintain and treat symptoms.
