Plasma kallikrein inhibitors are used to treat or prevent attacks from hereditary angioedema (HAE), a genetic condition that causes severe swelling. These medications work by blocking the activity of plasma kallikrein, an enzyme that plays a key role in the inflammation and swelling seen in HAE. Plasma kallikrein inhibitors come in different forms, including oral pills and injections. Examples include Kalbitor (ecallantide), Orladeyo (berotralstat), and Takhzyro (lanadelumab).
