Calcitonins are used to treat osteoporosis in females who've gone through menopause, Paget's disease of bone, and hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in the blood). They work by inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts, the cells that break down bone, which helps to maintain bone density and lower calcium levels in the blood. Examples include calcitonin salmon (Miacalcin) injection and calcitonin salmon nasal spray.
CALCITONIN treats osteoporosis. It may also be used to treat Paget's disease of the bone. It works by making your bones stronger and less likely to break (fracture). It can also be used to treat high calcium levels in your body. It works by blocking the breakdown of bone calcium and helping your kidneys remove calcium from your blood through the urine.
