Key takeaways:

  • Bimzelx (bimekizumab) is a biologic medication that’s injected under the skin. The typical Bimzelx dosage ranges from 160 mg to 320 mg every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the condition you’re treating. Plaque psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa (inflamed sweat glands) require more frequent Bimzelx dosages for the first 16 weeks (4 months) of treatment.

  • You’ll typically receive your first dose of Bimzelx in your prescriber’s office. But after that, you can inject it on your own at home. Be sure to remove your Bimzelx dose from the refrigerator about 30 to 45 minutes before injecting it to reduce discomfort.

  • If you’re eligible, a manufacturer savings card can help you get Bimzelx for as little as $5 per dose. A patient assistance program is also available. GoodRx can help you navigate the different ways to save.

Bimzelx (bimekizumab) is an injectable biologic medication that treats a number of different health conditions. If you’ve been prescribed Bimzelx, or if you’re considering it, it’s common to wonder how often you’ll need to inject it. Here, we’ll review the recommended Bimzelx dosages and what to do if you miss a dose.

What’s the typical Bimzelx dosage for adults?

Bimzelx is currently only approved for adults. The typical Bimzelx dosage depends on the condition you’re treating.

Bimzelx comes in a prefilled syringe or autoinjector device, and it’s injected under the skin. In most cases, you’ll receive your first dose of Bimzelx in your prescriber’s office. At your first appointment, you’ll learn how to inject the medication safely. After that, you can inject Bimzelx into your thigh or lower stomach on your own at home. Avoid bruised, red, or scaly areas of the skin when choosing where to inject Bimzelx. You should also remove your Bimzelx dose from the refrigerator about 30 to 45 minutes before injecting it. This helps reduce discomfort.

Plaque psoriasis

For plaque psoriasis, you’ll typically start with 320 mg of Bimzelx injected every 4 weeks for a total of 5 doses (16 weeks). After that, you can inject Bimzelx every 8 weeks if you weigh less than 120 kg (264 lb). If you weigh 120 kg or more, you’ll need to continue with injections every 4 weeks.

Psoriatic arthritis

For psoriatic arthritis, the recommended Bimzelx dosage is 160 mg injected every 4 weeks.

If you moderate to severe plaque psoriasis along with psoriatic arthritis, you’ll follow the above dosage for plaque psoriasis instead in most cases.

Ankylosing spondylitis or non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis

For spondyloarthritis-related conditions, the recommended Bimzelx dosage is 160 mg injected every 4 weeks.

Hidradenitis suppurativa

For hidradenitis suppurativa (sweat gland inflammation), the recommended Bimzelx dosage is 320 mg every 2 weeks for a total of 9 doses (16 weeks). You’ll then inject 160 mg every 4 weeks.

Are there any dosage adjustments for health conditions?

In most cases, you won’t need a different Bimzelx dosage if you’re living with kidney or liver problems. But Bimzelx can increase your liver enzymes, which can be an early sign of liver problems for some people. So if you’re currently dealing with acute liver problems, Bimzelx may not be the right medication for you. Your prescriber will likely check your liver function before you start using Bimzelx to make sure it’s a safe option.

What happens if you miss a dose of Bimzelx?

If you miss a dose of Bimzelx, you should inject it as soon as you remember. In most cases, you can go back to your regular dosing schedule. But it’s a good idea to check with your prescriber to be sure that’s the best option for you.

Since you’ll typically only inject Bimzelx every 4 to 8 weeks, it can be hard to remember when your dose is due. Consider using tools, such as a phone alarm or medication reminder app, to help you remember.

What should you do if you take too much Bimzelx?

Taking more Bimzelx than recommended isn’t likely, since it comes in a prefilled injection. But if you accidentally inject more than one dose or use Bimzelx sooner than recommended, reach out to Poison Control at 1-800-222-1212 or your prescriber’s office. They can provide next steps based on how much you used and what symptoms, if any, you’re experiencing.

How to save on Bimzelx

Bimzelx is only available as a brand-name medication. A copay card from the manufacturer can bring the cost down to as little as $5 per dose if you have commercial insurance. A patient assistance program is also available if you’re uninsured or underinsured.
