Pharmacist tips for Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate)

pharmacist
  • Carefully look at the medication's packaging before you use it. Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate) should have a tamper-resistant seal at the opening of the tube. If you're starting a new tube of medication for the first time, don't use it if this seal is missing or broken.

    • If you're using Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate) for the first time, unscrew the cap from the tube and use the top of the cap to pierce the end of the tube.

      • To fill the applicator with medication, attach the threaded end of the Milex Jel-Jector (the applicator) to the Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate) tube and squeeze the tube from the bottom until the medication fills up to your dosage level.

        • To use Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate), gently insert the Jel-Jector about 1/2 inch into the vagina, and squeeze the bulb once to dispense the gel. Keep your hands squeezed on the bulb until it's removed from the vagina, so the medication is not sucked back into the tube.

          • Wipe the threads of the tube and inside of the cap after each use, and make sure to re-cap the tube tightly. Flush the Milex Jel-Jector several times with water after each use.

            • If you get a reaction or irritation from Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate), stop using this medication and let your provider know.

              • Let your provider know if you smell a bad odor, have an unusual discharge, or experience any burning and itching in the vaginal area, especially if you also have fever or cramps. These might be symptoms of a more serious medical condition.

Frequently asked questions about Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate)

Why does wearing a pessary affect my vaginal acidity?
A pessary is a device inserted into the vagina to help support the vagina and the surrounding muscles, as well as help with certain urinary problems. Having a pessary can irritate the vagina area and change the vaginal acidity (or pH level). This can result in smelly discharges or vaginal infections.

Certain chemicals in Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate) can react with the materials of the pessary and cause it to discolor or break down. Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate) won't cause damage to the Milex pessary, but it's not known whether or not it'll cause damage to other types of pessary.
Why isn't Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate) FDA approved?
Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate) hasn't been approved by the FDA because this medication hasn't been found by the FDA to be safe and effective (work well). Sometimes, the FDA allows unapproved medications to be on the market because there aren't any available FDA-approved medications or not enough supply of FDA-approved medications to treat certain conditions. Talk with your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate).
Can I use Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate) if I'm pregnant?
Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate) hasn't been tested for use during pregnancy. If you're pregnant, don't use this medication unless you've talk with your provider first.
Can Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate) affect my chance of getting pregnant?
Using Trimo-san (oxyquinoline / sodium lauryl sulfate) within 6 hours of intercourse can lower your chance of getting pregnant. If you're trying to become pregnant, don't use this medication or any other personal vaginal hygiene products, such as douches or sprays, for 6 hours before or after having sex.
