Pramoxine is a topical medication used on the skin to relieve pain and itching from minor burns, scrapes, insect bites, hemorrhoids, and rashes. It's found in many over-the-counter, anti-itch products.
Relief of pain and itching from:
Pramoxine is a local anesthetic. It blocks pain signals in your nerves where it's applied. This causes numbness and lowers pain to help treat itchy or irritated skin.
The following side effects may get better over time as your body gets used to the medication. Let your healthcare provider know immediately if you continue to experience these symptoms or if they worsen over time.
This depends on what condition you're using pramoxine for. You shouldn't use pramoxine more than 3 to 4 times per day for sunburn, insect bites, rash, skin irritation, or minor burns, cuts, or scrapes. For hemorrhoids, you can use it up to 5 times daily. Using pramoxine more often than recommended can cause greater side effects, such as skin irritation.
Don't use pramoxine for longer than 7 days. If your symptoms last longer than 1 week, stop using pramoxine and let your healthcare provider know. If your symptoms go away and come back again within a few days of stopping the medication, let your provider know as well. In these situations, you might need to use a different medication to treat your symptoms.
Pramoxine can only be used for minor burns, cuts or scrapes, insect bites, rashes, and skin irritation. If you have any serious skin damage, such as deep, puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns, contact your provider or get medical help right away. You'll need to get appropriate care for these types of skin damage.
Pramoxine is safe to use in children ages 2 years and older for sunburn, insect bites, rash, skin irritation, and minor burns, cuts, or scrapes. Pramoxine can be used over the counter in children 12 years and older for the treatment of hemorrhoids. There aren't any studies looking at the safety of using pramoxine in younger children for these conditions. Ask your child's healthcare provider about the best treatment options if your child is under these age limits for their specific condition.
There isn't enough information to know if pramoxine is safe to use while pregnant or breastfeeding. It's unknown if the medication can cause harm to your unborn or breastfed baby. For your baby's safety, discuss the risks and benefits of using pramoxine with your healthcare provider first.
