Pharmacist tips for Irospan 24/6
- Make sure to tell your provider and pharmacist about all the medications you're taking before starting Irospan 24/6. Certain medications, such as antacids (e.g., calcium carbonate (Tums)), tetracyclines, and fluoroquinolones, might interact with the iron in Irospan 24/6 and affect how it works. Don't start any new medications while taking an iron multivitamin without talking to your provider or pharmacist first.
- Check the labels of any other vitamins (including multivitamins) and supplements you're taking. Don't take additional iron or multivitamins than what's prescribed by your provider. Doing so can lead to side effects from iron, such as upset stomach, nausea, and constipation.
- Make sure to have a healthy and balanced diet high in iron while taking Irospan 24/6. Depending on your iron levels and why you're taking an iron multivitamin, it's possible you might be able to stop taking the iron multivitamin if your iron levels are OK just from maintaining a healthy diet.
- Stomach-related side effects (e.g., nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, passing gas) are the most common side effects with Irospan 24/6. If these symptoms bother you a lot, talk to your provider because you might need to be switched to a different iron supplement.
- Irospan 24/6 can cause your stool to be discolored, which is a common side effect of iron supplements. Don't be alarmed if you see your stool turn a tarry-black color.
- Keep Irospan 24/6 out of reach of children so that they don't accidentally take it. Irospan 24/6 contains iron, and accidental overdose of iron-containing medications is the leading cause of deadly poisoning in young children. If your child took Irospan 24/6 and you notice them vomiting up blood or having diarrhea and stomach pain, call your local Poison Control Center right away at 1-800-222-1222.
Risks and warnings for Irospan 24/6
Irospan 24/6 can cause some serious health issues. This risk may be even higher for certain groups. If this worries you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about other options.
Iron overdose
- Risk factors: Taking too much iron | Receiving multiple blood transfusions | Medical problems that raise your blood iron level | Children under 6 years of age
If you take multiple supplements that contain iron or take more Irospan 24/6 than recommended, there's a chance that your iron level will become too high. This is dangerous because it can lead to problems such as tears in the gut, seizures, and liver damage. Your provider will regularly do blood tests to check your iron level while you're taking Irospan 24/6. Let your provider know immediately if you experience symptoms of too much iron, such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhea.
Accidental overdose of iron-containing products, like Irospan 24/6, can be extremely harmful to children under 6 years of age. Keep Irospan 24/6 out of reach of children so that they don't accidentally take it. If your child took Irospan 24/6 and you notice them vomiting up blood or having diarrhea and stomach pain, call your local Poison Control Center right away at 1-800-222-1222.
Masking anemia due to low vitamin B12
Irospan 24/6 contains folic acid. If you have a low red blood cell (RBC) count that's related to having low vitamin B12 levels (pernicious anemia), then taking folic acid might hide your condition. This is because your lab results for your RBC count might show it's within normal range, even though you still have anemia. This means that you might not get the medical attention you need. If you have a history of low vitamin B12 levels, let your healthcare provider know.
