Common Questions

How do GLP-1s like Ozempic work?

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1—a hormone released in the digestive tract. GLP-1 receptor agonists act like the natural GLP-1 hormone in the body. This hormone works to lower your blood sugar by causing your pancreas to release more insulin, stopping your liver from releasing more sugar, and slowing down your digestion. Medications like Zepbound also act like a second hormone called glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP).

How long does it take Zepbound to work?

Zepbound works very quickly for weight loss, typically within a few weeks. You may notice a decrease in your appetite shortly after starting it. In one study, participants noticed significant weight loss at the very first weight check (which was 4 weeks after they started Zepbound).

How much does Ozempic cost?

Many factors can affect how much you pay out of pocket for GLP-1s, including:

  • The pharmacy you choose
  • Your insurance coverage status
  • Your location
  • Your prescribed dosage
  • Your eligibility for patient assistance programs or manufacturer savings cards

If you have health insurance or you qualify for a manufacturer savings program, you may be able to pay much less. You can also consider using a GoodRx coupon to make your prescription more affordable.

What are the common side effects of GLP-1s like Ozempic and Zepbound?

Particularly when you’re first getting started on a GLP-1, you may experience digestion-related side effects. These side effects are also common after your dosage is increased. For most people, they get better over time. Common GLP-1 side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation

Animal studies have shown an increased risk of thyroid C-cell tumors with these medications. But this risk hasn’t been confirmed in people. Because of this, you shouldn’t take Ozempic or Wegovy if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer. You also shouldn’t take them if you have a genetic condition called multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 syndrome.
