Preeclampsia is characterized by high blood pressure and high levels of protein in the urine in the late second or third trimester of pregnancy. It can develop into pregnancy-related seizures called eclampsia, which can be life-threatening to both the mother and fetus.
The only cure for preeclampsia is delivery. However, certain beta blockers and calcium channel blockers may be used to treat the high blood pressure, and magnesium sulfate may be used to prevent seizures.
