Atypical-antipsychotic and opioid receptor antagonist combination medications are used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. These medications work by targeting both dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain, which helps to balance mood and reduce symptoms of psychosis. Additionally, they block opioid receptors, which can help decrease the risk of certain side effects often associated with antipsychotic treatments such as weight gain. These medications are typically available in oral form. An example is olanzapine and samidorphan (Lybalvi).
