Finasteride is a prescription medication that treats men’s hair loss. It is the generic version of Propecia and shares the same active ingredient.
Learn about finasteride (generic Propecia)Testosterone is a hormone that’s responsible for growth and muscle mass in males. It’s also used to form another hormone, called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). And while DHT plays several important roles in the body, it’s also known to cause hair loss. DHT is formed from testosterone by an enzyme (protein) called 5-alpha reductase. Finasteride blocks this enzyme, which lowers DHT levels and helps prevent hair loss.
Read about how finasteride worksFinasteride starts lowering DHT levels right away. Clinical studies show a 65% decrease in DHT levels within 24 hours of the first dose. This helps prevent further hair loss. However, hair regrowth happens over time, so it takes longer to start seeing visible results from finasteride. In studies, results were seen as early as 3 months after starting finasteride treatment. More significant improvements were seen at 6 and 12 months. Some people don’t have visible results in the first year of finasteride treatment.
More about how long finasteride takes to workMost side effects of finasteride are hormonal. The 1mg finasteride dose, which is used for hair loss, is most often associated with sex-related side effects. Common side effects reported by at least 1% of men taking finasteride for hair loss in clinical trials include erectile dysfunction, reduced libido (sex drive), and ejaculation issues (e.g., lower ejaculation volume).
See all reported side effectsNo, finasteride (Propecia) can actually raise testosterone levels, not lower them. This is because testosterone is changed in your body to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by an enzyme (protein) called 5-alpha reductase. Since finasteride prevents 5-alpha reductase from working, there's more testosterone hanging around because it's no longer being converted into DHT.
More on finasterideYes. Long-term finasteride treatment can help regrow hair. The majority of hair regrowth seems to happen in the first 2 years of taking finasteride. But keep in mind that continued treatment still prevents further hair loss. Finasteride also seems to work better at regrowing hair the earlier you start taking it. Studies suggest it's best to start taking finasteride as soon as you notice hair loss. It’s also likely to be more effective for balding that starts at the crown of the head than at the hairline.

Finasteride (Propecia) can cause erectile dysfunction and ejaculation issues in some men, which could affect your ability to conceive. There’s also some evidence that it could lower sperm count, potentially impacting fertility. But these effects on sperm are generally reversible after you stop taking finasteride. The main risk to pregnancy is through women. Pregnant females and females of childbearing age shouldn't take finasteride, or handle, or touch finasteride tablets (especially broken or crushed tablets) without protection. Exposure to the medication can cause serious birth defects in a male fetus.

Yes, finasteride will treat the root cause of hormonal hair loss. Studies show it can help slow or reverse the process of hair loss, regardless of age.
Finasteride does not significantly affect muscle growth — either positively or negatively. If muscle gain is your goal, strength training, nutrition, and sleep matter much more.
