How Xeglyze (abametapir) works

Xeglyze (abametapir) is a metalloproteinase inhibitor. It blocks a protein called metalloproteinase in lice that's important for their survival and for the development of lice eggs.

Shake your bottle of Xeglyze (abametapir) well and then apply the medication to dry hair. Massage the medication thoroughly into your scalp and hair. Make sure to use enough lotion so all of your hair and scalp are covered. Leave the lotion on your head for 10 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water. Wash your hands after using it and throw away any unused lotion (but don't flush it down the toilet or in the sink).

You can shampoo your hair any time after your Xeglyze (abametapir) treatment.

Typically, only one treatment with Xeglyze (abametapir) is enough to kill the lice and their eggs. In addition to using the medication, make sure to also dry-clean or wash all of your recently worn clothing, hats, used bedding and towels with hot water. Your personal care items like combs, brushes, and hair clips should be washed with hot water as well. After your treatment, you can use a fine-tooth comb or special nit comb to remove the dead lice and their eggs. Speak with your provider for an alternative treatments if you still have lice after using Xeglyze (abametapir).

The most common side effects of Xeglyze (abametapir) include redness of the skin or scalp, rash, burning feeling, skin irritation, vomiting, eye irritation, and changes in your hair color.

Xeglyze (abametapir) can only be used in children at least 6 months old. This is because Xeglyze (abametapir) contains benzyl alcohol, which can cause breathing problems or even death in newborns or premature infants. Xeglyze (abametapir) should be used with caution in children 6 months and older. Though the risk is much lower, there's still a chance that this medication can cause breathing problems. Also, all children using Xeglyze (abametapir) should be supervised by an adult to prevent the medication from being accidentally swallowed. Swallowing this medication can lead to serious side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, or even coma and death.
