Poly-Vi-Sol is an over-the-counter liquid multivitamin for infants and toddlers. It's usually given to supplement children's diet if they're not getting enough nutrition from food alone. Different Poly-Vi-Sol products might contain different ingredients, such as with or without iron. Poly-Vi-Sol is given once per day or as directed by your child's provider. The liquid is measured with a syringe and can be placed directly in the mouth, or mixed with formula or other foods. Poly-Vi-Sol typically don't cause side effects if taken as instructed.

Make sure to only use the syringe that comes with the medication to measure out your child's dose. Don't use household spoons because they aren't accurate and might cause your child to take the wrong dose.
After drawing up the dose of Poly-Vi-Sol using the syringe, you can give it directly in your child's mouth, or you can slowly mix it with formula, breast milk, juice, cereal, or other foods.
Make sure to give your child any food or drink that's mixed with Poly-Vi-Sol within 1 hour or else the medication might not work as well. Never save the dose for later once it has already been mixed.
If you're giving Poly-Vi-Sol directly in the mouth, place the syringe in your child's mouth with the tip against the inside of their cheek. Squeeze the end of the syringe to give the dose.
After giving Poly-Vi-Sol, there might be some leftover medication inside of the syringe; this is expected. You don't need to give more of the medication to make up for this amount in the syringe
Don't give your child any additional multivitamins than what's prescribed by their provider. Doing so can lead to children taking too much vitamins, which can be dangerous.
If you're giving your child Poly-Vi-Sol with Iron, you might notice their teeth look darker or stained. This coloring is only temporary and should go away after brushing their teeth. If it doesn't, stop using Poly-Vi-Sol and contact their provider or dentist.
Poly-Vi-Sol with Iron can cause your child's stool to be discolored, which is a common and expected side effect of iron supplements.
Store the bottle at room temperature or in the refrigerator and keep the medication liquid in the original container it came in from the pharmacy.
Keep Poly-Vi-Sol out of reach of children so that they don't accidentally take it. This product contains iron, and accidental overdose of iron-containing medications can be very serious for young children. If your child took Poly-Vi-Sol and you notice them vomiting up blood or having diarrhea and stomach pain, call your local Poison Control Center right away at 1-800-222-1222.
Poly-Vi-Sol can cause some serious health issues. This risk may be even higher for certain groups. If this worries you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about other options.
Risk factors: Taking too much iron | Receiving multiple blood transfusions | Medical problems that raise your blood iron level | Children under 6 years of age
There's a chance that your child's iron level will become too high, especially if you give them too high of a dose of Poly-Vi-Sol with Iron or use other supplements containing iron. An iron overdose is dangerous because it can lead to problems such as tears in the gut, seizures, and liver damage. Your child's provider might regularly do blood tests to check your child's iron level while they're taking Poly-Vi-Sol. Let your provider know right away if your child experiences symptoms of too much iron, such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhea.
Accidental overdose of iron-containing products, like Poly-Vi-Sol, can be extremely harmful to children under 6 years of age.
