Hypoparathyroidism occurs when there is too little parathyroid hormone (PTH) being produced, leading to abnormal levels of calcium and phosphorus in the body. Symptoms include tingling or burning in the fingertips, toes and lips, muscle aches or cramps, muscle spasms, fatigue, weakness, painful menstrual periods, hair loss, dry skin, brittle nails, and anxiety or depression.
Treatments for hypoparathyroidism include medication, vitamin supplements, diet change, and hormone replacement therapy.
