Hyperammonemia refers to excess levels of ammonia in the blood. It may be congenital (something you are born with) or acquired (caused by a disease such as hepatitis or by alcohol consumption). Increased levels of ammonia in the brain can cause neurological symptoms. Other symptoms may include lethargy, irritability, lack of appetite, hyperventilation, and seizures.
Treatment for hyperammonemia includes changes to diet, medications to treat symptoms and correct enzyme levels, and in some cases, dialysis.
