What Is a Goiter?

Comprehensive information for you or a loved one — including treatment options and discounts on popular medications.

A goiter is an abnormal enlargement or swelling of the thyroid gland. It can be caused by a thyroid imbalance, iodine deficiency, an inflamed or cancerous thyroid, or other conditions. The swollen thyroid gland can cause a cough, difficulty breathing, and difficulty swallowing.

Treatment for a goiter can include thyroid medication, surgery, or radioactive iodine. Thyroxines (levothyroxine, Synthroid, Levoxyl) and triiodothyronines (liothyronine, Cytomel) can help correct a thyroid imbalance.
