Benzothiazoles are primarily used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Some also have other uses, such as managing certain types of cancer. Benzothiazoles work by inhibiting the release of glutamate, a neurotransmitter that can cause nerve cell damage when present in high amounts. These medications come in different forms, including oral tablets and oral suspensions. One example is riluzole (Exservan, Tiglutik).
