Just like with human foods, from time to time, pet foods become contaminated. When this happens, the manufacturer of the pet food will voluntarily issue a recall. Or the FDA can request or order a pet food company to recall products that can harm animals.

Bacterial contamination is the most common reason for dog and cat food recalls. Bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria can make both pets and humans very sick. Foods can also be recalled because they’re contaminated with foreign objects or diseases. For example, bird flu was recently found in multiple recalled raw cat foods.

You can stay most up to date on which pet foods have been recalled by checking the American Veterinary Medical Association’s recalls list or the FDA’s website. But in the meantime, here’s information about recent dog and cat food recalls, along with what to do if you have a recalled food at home.

What should you do if your pet’s food has been recalled?

If your pet’s food has been recalled, do not feed it to your dog or cat. Check the manufacturer’s website to learn whether you can get a refund for the recalled food. You can also check the food’s packaging for a contact number and reach out to the company directly.

Then, dispose of the recalled food in a sealed container to prevent other animals from getting into the contaminated product.

It’s also best to thoroughly clean and disinfect your pet’s bowls and food storage containers if their food has been recalled. This helps kill any bacteria that may have been in the recalled food and lowers the risk of you and your pet getting sick.

If you notice any signs of illness in your dog or cat after they have eaten recalled food, reach out to your veterinarian. Diarrhea is one of the most common signs of bacteria-related sickness in pets. It can sometimes have blood in it.

The bottom line

Dog and cat foods get recalled for a number of reasons. You can track recalled pet foods through the American Veterinary Medical Association or the FDA’s website. Recently recalled dog foods include products made by Blue Ridge Beef and Answers. Recently recalled cat foods include raw products made by Savage Pet, Wild Coast Raw, Blue Ridge Beef, and Northwest Naturals.

Pet foods are often recalled because they are contaminated with harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, or Listeria. If your dog or cat’s food has been recalled, stop feeding it to them. Contact the manufacturer to learn how to get a refund or for further instructions. Then, dispose of the recalled food and thoroughly clean your pet’s food bowls and storage containers.
