What is Bravecto Quantum for dogs, and what is it used for?

Bravecto Quantum is FDA approved to prevent fleas and certain ticks in dogs who are at least 6 months old. The medication doesn’t prevent all ticks. But it does provide protection against:

  • Brown dog ticks

  • Black-legged ticks

  • American dog ticks

  • Lone star ticks

Bravecto Quantum is different because it needs to be given to dogs only once a year. Protection lasts 12 months for fleas and most ticks. Bravecto Quantum works only 8 months against lone star ticks.

How does Bravecto Quantum work for dogs?

Bravecto Quantum works to kill fleas and ticks on dogs thanks to its active ingredient, fluralaner. Fluralaner causes parasites’ nervous systems to stop working correctly. As a result, pests die after ingesting the medication.

What is the dosage of Bravecto Quantum for dogs, and how is it given?

The dosage of Bravecto Quantum for your dog depends on their weight. Your veterinarian will determine the best dosage for your dog. But in general, dogs receive 0.1 mL per kilogram of body weight once a year.

What are the most serious risks of Bravecto Quantum for dogs?

If your dog shows neurological symptoms after receiving Bravecto Quantum, contact your veterinarian right away. Your dog may need medical attention. They may also need to switch to a different flea and tick preventive.

Some dogs are sensitive to the medication and have an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions to Bravecto Quantum can include anaphylaxis, in which your dog goes into shock. This is an emergency that requires treatment at an animal hospital right away.

Which dogs shouldn’t take Bravecto Quantum?

Bravecto Quantum is not FDA approved or safe for dogs under 6 months old. Bravecto Quantum may not be the best choice for dogs with a history of seizures since the medication can cause seizures.

Does Bravecto Quantum interact with other dog medications?

Bravecto Quantum doesn’t have many known interactions with other dog medications. But you should not give your dog other flea and tick medications while they are on Bravecto Quantum.

Tell your veterinarian about which medications your dog takes before they’re given Bravecto Quantum. Your vet will know if there are interactions to worry about.

The bottom line

Bravecto Quantum (fluralaner) is a new FDA-approved flea and tick medication for dogs. It needs to be given to dogs only once a year as an injection. This makes it easier to remember than monthly preventives. Bravecto Quantum must be given to dogs at a veterinary clinic, since it’s an injection.

Common side effects of Bravecto Quantum in dogs include low energy, lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and irritation at the injection site. The active ingredient in Bravecto Quantum can cause seizures and other neurological side effects in some dogs. Talk to your dog’s veterinarian to see if this once-yearly flea and tick medication may be right for your pup.
