Crestor (rosuvastatin) is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor or 'statin'. It lowers levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Statins may also reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or other health problems in patients with risk factors for heart disease. There is currently no generic available for Crestor, and other generic statins may be just as effective and less expensive. Statins with generic alternatives include Zocor (simvastatin), Lipitor (atorvastatin), and Pravachol (pravastatin).
